Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, MP First elected in the 1988 federal election, Maurizio Bevilacqua has served seven terms as the Member of Parliament for Vaughan. On May 26, 2002, he was appointed Minister of State for International Financial Institutions. He had been Minister of State (Science, Research and Development) since January 15, 2002. Prior to his appointment to Cabinet, he had been Chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance since 1997, where he was successful in proposing recommendations that were incorporated in consecutive Liberal budgets. Mr. Bevilacqua has also served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources Development. His past responsibilities also include Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour, Chair of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and Chair of the Ministerial Task Force on Youth. Presently, he is the Official Opposition Critic for Citizenship and Immigration. Locally, Mr. Bevilacqua has shown that building partnerships between government, business and the community is the most effective way to create opportunities for residents. Initiatives including Blue Willow housing for seniors, the Millennium Scholarship program for students, the York Region Strategic Alliance, Employment Assistance Services of York Region, Team Canada, Job Oppotunities for youth and the Youth Employment Strategy have helped thousands of constituents. A firm believer in partnerships and consultation, Mr. Bevilacqua is committed to ensuring residents have a strong voice in the national decision-making process. To that end, he has implemented an effective outreach program, spoken to over 80,000 students as part of his School Speaking Tour and has helped over 40,000 constituents obtain improved access to government services through his constituency and Ottawa offices. Among his many recognitions, Mr. Bevilacqua received the prestigious “Premio Italiani nel Mondo” which is awarded by the Italian Government to individuals of Italian heritage who have served as outstanding role models within the international community. The State of Israel Bonds Canada also honoured Mr. Bevilacqua for his contribution to improving labour-management relations. In recognition of his work advancing Canada/US relations, he was presented with the Key to the City of Dallas. Maurizio Bevilacqua is a graduate of York University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree.
