Candidate's Platform We asked: What are the two most prominent issues facing the Newmarket-Aurora riding and what are your solutions? “The two largest issues facing Newmarket and Aurora this federal election is the economy, and quality of life. In the past 2-1/2 years, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has kept our economic fundamentals sound. As leader of the Conservative government, he has balanced our budgets, controlled spending, reduced the national debt by $40 billion and cut taxes, including GST, for every Canadian. We enjoy the lowest unemployment rate in 30 years, the lowest tax rates in 40 years and have the best fiscal position of the G7 countries. Residents in Newmarket and Aurora benefit from sound Conservative economic policies with low unemployment and more money to spend on family priorities. Going forward, the question is one of leadership: who can best lead us at the national level during these uncertain global economic times? Liberal Leader Stphane Dion plans to raise the cost of everything we buy with his untested carbon tax. In contrast, we know Prime Minister Harper’s economic plan works and he is committed to prudent fiscal policies with targeted tax relief. Our environment will benefit from tough new regulations to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions to 20% below 2006 levels by 2020, including real penalties for big polluters. “
