How long has the riding existed? This last election marked the birth of the new federal riding, which mirrors the provincial riding of the same name. It was created from the ridings of York North and Vaughan-King-Aurora and is bounded by Newmarket to the north, Bloomington Road to the south, Highway 404 to the east and Bathurst Street to the west.

Voting patterns: In recent times, the riding has been Liberal: In York North in 2000, Liberal Karen Kraft Sloan defeated the Alliance's Bob Yaciuk to win a third term. In Vaughan-King-Aurora in 2000, Liberal Maurizio Bevilacqua defeated the Alliance's Adrian Visentin, winning his third term. Conservative Belinda Stronach was elected in 2006, but the riding became Liberal once again when she crossed the floor.

Trivia: The riding can swing both ways, which Stronach showed when she was re-elected under the Liberal banner. The area's best-known business is Stronach's family firm, auto parts maker Magna International.

Issues: Transportation will likely be a hot issue in Newmarket-Aurora, which is served by Hwys. 404 and 407. Maintaining the infrastructure up to population growth is an overall theme in this riding, where incomes are high and unemployment is low.
