| The phones at the electoral office for Oak Ridges-Markham sit silently as election day runs smoothly in the riding. “I didn’t get the call, yet, about any big problems,” said Nathalia de Montigny, the Elections Canada media relations officer for Toronto and the GTA. More than 200 polling stations within the riding are working like well-oiled machines. Between 600 and 700 Elections Canada employees sit at polling stations crossing names off the voters list, checking photo ID, asking voters to recite their address, giving out ballots, folding ballots and putting the undisclosed ballots into the white boxes marked with the distinctive X on the front. “Everything is going well,” Ms de Montigny said. “There’s not much I can say.” The riding spans more than 715 square kilometres across York Region from Durham to Dufferin-Peel, including the town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, part of King Township, part of Richmond Hill and part of Markham. Oak Ridges-Markham Election Numbers: • 4,844 people voted in advance polls. • There are 135,361 eligible voters in the riding. • In the 2006 federal election, only 74,834 voters cast a ballot.
